Persistence and Remission of Incipient Stuttering among High-risk Children
نویسندگان
چکیده
This investigation concerns the persistence of stuttering and recovery from it among highrisk children. At the end of the second year of a 6-year prospective study, 26 of 93 preschool children with a parental history of stuttering were classified as stutterers. Four years later, seven of these children were classified as persistent stutterers, and 16 children were classified as recovered stutterers. The articulatory and linguistic skills of these two groups of children and the communicative and speaking behaviors of their mothers, were measured before and after the onset of stuttering. The analysis of these measures revealed that the articulatory skills of the children and the communicative style and language complexity of the mothers differentiated the incipient stutters whose stuttering subsequently became chronic from those who recovered. © 1999 Elsevier Science Inc.

Speech-Language Pathologists’ Perception of Bilingualism as a Risk Factor for Stuttering
Researchers have suggested that being bilingual may increase the likelihood of development of stuttering. This suggestion was recently discounted by the data that indicate bilingual children who do not stutter produce an atypically high number of speech disfluencies. Thus, bilingual children are not at increased risk for development of stuttering, but they do appear to be at increased risk for ...
متن کاملPredicting persistence of and recovery from stuttering by the teenage years based on information gathered at age 8 years.
OBJECTIVES Information obtained at around age 8 years was used to construct a model that predicted persistence of, and recovery from, stuttering several years later. A logistic regression model that classified children as persistent or recovered at the teenage years using stuttering history and symptom information obtained at around age 8 years was constructed and validated. METHODS A longitu...
